May 2021 Playlist: Mental Health Awareness Month

The Collective Identity Mentoring seeks to support young Black women and girls navigate the world with guidance. We understand how much stigma there can be surrounding mental health in the Black community, so we seek to nurture open discussions about how we, as Black women, are affected by it.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Black Americans face mental health obstacles at a higher rate than other groups. Statistics also show that Black Americans are more likely than white Americans to grapple with feelings of sadness, worthlessness and despair but fewer than 10% of Black Americans receive mental health counseling or treatment.

This month is Mental Heath Awareness Month and we are dedicating our May playlist to songs that raise awareness about mental health issues by musicians who have overcome or are currently managing their mental illnesses - and discuss it openly in their music.
